Checking In for June 5
This weekend the Vestry will be having a retreat. The purpose of this time together is to prayerfully discern where we would like Church of the Advent to be in 5 years with all of our ministries and finances. We will also be discerning how we want to accomplish these goals.
This is a wonderful opportunity! We are so fortunate that Advent is now in a place where we can make solid plans for our future as a Parish. The most important part of this process, however, is that we will be in prayerful discernment.
What is prayerful discernment? The official definition of discernment according to the Merriam Webster online dictionary is “the ability to see and understand people, things, or situations clearly and intelligently”. Prayerful discernment, however means that we must figure out what God is calling us to do- in this case for the betterment of His Church.
This is a much more difficult process, since there are so many factors that compete for our attention each day. Which ones are we supposed to tend to? We as a Vestry must take this time to sort out what God calls us as a Vestry, and each of us as individuals, to do. We must talk, analyze, and sort through all of the ‘stuff’ that makes up the daily life of the Church. We must have our Clergy there to lead us in prayer and guide us spiritually. However, at the end of the day, the most important part of this process of prayerful discernment is not going to be the 5 year goals we communicate to you. It is going to be the relationships we forge through working together in this process. It is only through these relationships and the willingness to put work into them that the goals for our Church will be realized.
We are a community, a Parish Family, and we all need each other. We thank you for the opportunity, through your voting for each of us, to make Advent what God wants it to be.
Yours in Christ,
George James (Rectors Warden)
Chris Pepe (Finance Warden)
