A Word From Our Senior Warden

We are approaching what I hope will be a sunny and enjoyable summer for all. Advent has experienced a number of changes recently. Reverend Linda has moved on to a new position. Alexis has a new opportunity and is moving on in her music career. We thank both of them for their contributions to our growth at Advent.

At the same time we have elected new members to the vestry who are dedicated to the continuing growth of the church. God is always creating something new.  We welcome Vickie Knots, Josh Auld and Victoria Robinson to the continuing members of the vestry. We look forward to their fresh ideas and enthusiasm. At the same time we say thank you to Kevin McLean who was instrumental in introducing us to Family Promise. With regret the vestry accepted the resignation of Susan Pignolo effective August 1st. Susan, her husband Bob and family will be relocating to Rochester MN where Bob will be the chair of Geriatric Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. Susan has been a refreshing voice moving our Formation program forward. She and her children have played key roles in the youth musical productions over the last three years. They will be missed but I am sure our loss will be Minnesota’s gain. In order to maintain our momentum in Formation the vestry voted to seat Suzette Butler on the vestry effective August 1.  Suzette has been a long-time participant in our formation program.

In addition to the vestry changes we are excited to welcome Reverend Greg Wilson. Greg will have multiple responsibilities but will focus at least half of his time on Children, Youth and Family ministries. He will also be helping in our Outreach programs. Please introduce yourself to him. Also remember Jesus knows your name but Greg doesn’t so please wear your nametag!

We continue to move forward with safety improvements for the church. The rail by the lower level south door was beginning to rust so Chris Pepe removed it and when it is refinished it will be reinstalled. We will also be addressing the railing at the lower level north side entrance as well. The fire alarm system on the south side lower level has been upgraded to accommodate the sleeping areas we will use for family promise and other overnight activities at the church. The orders for the exit doors and windows for the south side rooms have been placed and should be installed in the fall.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have made and continue to make our Family Promise ministry a success. Despite not being able to host the program at Advent this very dedicated group has persevered the difficulties of using other churches as home sites while we do the safety renovations at Advent. Hopefully by the fall/winter we will be able to bring everyone home to Advent.

I will close with a favorite quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes: “I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port of Heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it, but we must sail, and not drift ,nor lie at anchor.”

As Reverend Nancy said on Sunday none of us are perfect but with everyone’s help and dedication Advent will continue to be the best it can be.

Thank you for the opportunity and honor to serve as your Senior Warden.

George James
