A Christian Community: The Order of the Daughters of the King® (DOK)

➢ A religious order for women who are communicants of the Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran (ELCA), and Roman Catholic churches.
➢ Daughters share a commitment to a the DOK Rule of Life
➢ Chapters are located in all continents, except Antarctica 
➢ As of 2024, there were over 20,000 Daughters.

The DOK -- A Christian Community
Members of the DOK are women and girls who:
➢ Share a primary goal: To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known to others.
➢ Are lay and ordained ministers
➢ Are each at their individual stage of their Christian journey – some have just begun and some have embraced their spiritual journey for a long time
➢ Desire a closer walk with the Lord.
➢ Seek to be strengthened through the discipline of a Rule of Life
➢ Seek to support, and be supported, through spiritual companionship of our sisters. Members may be: Junior Daughters (under the age of 16), Senior Daughters (16 years and older) and Senior Daughters who are Daughters At Large

The DOK Rule of Life: Prayer, Service & Evangelism
Daily Practice of Prayer
➢ Daily Gratitude Prayer – a prayer of thanksgiving for life itself and for the privilege of sharing the love of Christ with others.
➢ Daily Prayer for Christ’s Kingdom – a prayer for unity in Christ’s church, the spread of Christ’s Kingdom, God’s blessings upon the members of our Order and our clergy, and the spiritual growth of our churches.
➢ Moment by Moment Prayers – a prayer may arise at any time throughout the day, sometimes with others, sometimes aloud.
➢ Prayer Through Meditation, Study and Corporate Worship – daily intention to grow our spiritual life with meditation, study and corporate worship.
➢ Prayer for Guidance and Opportunity to Listen – daily opportunities to ask God for guidance & listen for an answer: “Lord, what would you have us do?”

Rule of Service - Seeking Daily to do the Will of God as Part of a Rule of Life
The Rule of Prayer always supports the Rule of Service:
➢ There are always more “needs” than we have time and energy for, so we are guided by prayer and discernment as to sharing our gifts and talents Core of the DOK Rule of Service:
➢ Jesus’ teaching: “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these...you did it for Me.” Matthew 25:40 (NIV).
➢ Seeking to do the will of God wherever we are as a daily application of our baptismal vows Intentionally General:
➢ Any service performed from the heart with God’s love is sacred labor – no task is too small to honor Christ -- Washing dishes, helping neighbors, all God’s people & creatures are worthy of our service.
➢ We serve in many places, inside & outside the church
➢ Service is a sacred work – service to family, church, community or strangers.
➢ There are no designations or restrictions as to when, where, or how a Daughter or Chapter should serve.

Evangelize, by DOK National President, Jane Searcy:
➢ We are not all called to speak to the masses – we share our faith when, and as, the opportunity arises.
➢ We welcome being in community with others and feel comfortable telling stories of God working in our lives.
➢ We are called to be the face of Christ to all we meet.
➢ One person, at a time - one prayer, one act of kindness, one story of God’s love at a time, we show God’s love and the difference that God calls us to be by example.
➢ If all else fails, use words.
➢ Prayer: May my life reflect Your grace & truth.

Advent’s DOK Anchor Chapter – Spiritual Companionship and Activities
Committed to a Rule of Life of Prayer, Service and Evangelism
➢ Monthly meetings to encourage our spiritual growth and to review DOK activities.
➢ Involved in various types of service within and outside of Advent.
➢ Jointly we are committed to help maintain the Little Free Pantry in the parking lot, and the 1st & 3rd Saturday Pray, Walk and Talk, which Rebecca and Kathleen initiated during June 2024.
Joining together in spiritual growth, we are reading and discussing Brother Lawrence’s “The Practice of the Presence of God.”
Being in community with like-minded women that seek a religious and spiritually rich life is a Blessing.
We all have hills and valleys in our lives and God holds us in His hands wherever we are and His steadfast love endures forever. To be in community with others who seek God’s will and love.

DOK Anchor Chapter – A Religious Community at Advent – Moving Forward
Most DOK members start with some curiosity.
There is an initial 3-month discernment and study period (the Discernment Period) following a standardized DOK Study and Guidebook:
➢ To understand the DOK Rule of Life – Rule of Prayer and Rule of Service and Evangelize
➢ The commitment of becoming a DOK Sister
➢ The various aspects and structure of the DOK, including the expectation to support the Order through dues payments
New members join for a variety of reasons:
➢ Logical next step in their spiritual growth
➢ Seek to be in community with other women who seek to follow a Rule of Life.
➢ Feel called to make a commitment to follow a Rule of Life and the DOK Rule of Life seems to fit.
At Advent, we plan to offer a DOK Discernment Period after Easter. We welcome anyone who is interested in learning more about and joining the DOK Anchor Chapter at Advent.
