Frequently Asked Questions

We welcome you to Church of the Advent, questions and all! Below are some of our most often asked questions. If you cannot find an answer to your question below, please contact us and we would be happy to assist you.

What kind of church are you?

We are a Christian congregation and a part of the Episcopal Church. The Episcopal Church is the U.S. branch (province) of the Anglican Communion, a worldwide family of churches with historic roots in the Protestant Reformation in England. The Anglican Communion has over 85 million members 165 countries and is third largest Christian body in the world (after the Roman Catholic Church and the Easter Orthodox Church).

How will I know what to do during the service?

When you first arrive at the Episcopal Church of the Advent for a worship service, a greeter will welcome you as you enter the church and will give you a worship bulletin. The worship bulletin will guide you through the service. If you have any questions when you arrive, the greeter will gladly answer any questions you may have. We are blessed to have first-time guests nearly every Sunday, so it is completely ok if there are aspects of the worship service that are unfamiliar to you.

Do I need to wear specific clothes?

Absolutely not! Dress comfortably. Some members of our church “dress up” for Sunday services, but most do not.

Can I take communion in your church?

In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians of any church or denomination are invited to receive communion each Sunday. You do not need to be an Episcopalian to receive communion.

Do I need to be a member to participate in church activities?

No. Our worship services and activities are open to anyone and everyone, not just members.

Do I need to make a monetary donation if I worship there?

Absolutely not! You are more than welcome to make a donation, but it is not required. You are our guest, and your presence is more than sufficient.

Is your church building accessible?

Yes, we do have an accessible entrance to the building, and there is an elevator in the church.

Do you have programs for children/youth?

Yes, every Sunday from the end of September to mid-May, we offer Sunday school for ages 4 through high school, from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

Does your church welcome LGBTQ individuals and families?

Yes! As a congregation of the Episcopal Church, we are committed to the full inclusion of all individuals and families, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Is your church liberal or conservative?

That question is very difficult question to answer, and we are proud of that fact. Our congregation is comprised of individuals from across the political and theological spectrum - Democratic and Republican, traditional and progressive. We believe our shared humanity and our shared commitment to Jesus are more important than our disagreements about politics or theology.
