Where: St. Cecilia’s Room (Advent Choir Room)

Book: Blue Hymnal 1982 (mostly)

Open to all ages

Session One (June 4) – Hymns that move by step (ie:  376 – Joyful, Joyful; 67 Comfort, comfort ye; 82 Of the Father’s love; Sheet music: Somers-Jesus is the Light; Loux – And Peace begins) and finding ‘DO’ which is the home note. What is a Major scale? Singing on the Breath.

Session Two (June 11) – Hymn that use steps (2nds) and skips (3rds) (ie: Blue Hymnal 111 Silent Night; 115 What Child is this?; 8 Morning has broken; 615 Thy Kingdom come; 306 Come, risen Lord) Easy vocal warmups and What is a Triad?

Session Three (June 18) – What is a perfect 4th? and Hymns that use them (ie: 380 Praise God from whom; 66 Come, thou long expected Jesus; 671 Amazing Grace; 645 The King of Love; 686 Come thou fount; 400 All Creatures of our God) Review of Major Scale; Intervals 3rds and 4ths; Singing on the Breath

Session Four (June 25) – Is it a March or a Waltz? Meter in Hymnody and adding the Perfect 5th. Marches - 718 God of our Fathers; 787 (Green WLP) We are marching in the light of God; Easter Hymns 207 Jesus Christ is Risen;450 All hail the power of Jesus’ Name; 287 For all the Saints; 225 Hail thee Festival Day

Waltzes – 717 My Country tis of thee; 390 Praise to the Lord; 8 Morning has broken; 657 Love Divine; 660 O Master, let me walk; 490 I want to walk as a child

Session Five (July 2) – Hymns that use Minor Scales (ie: 115 What Child is this?; 168 Bach’s Passion Chorale; 324 Let all mortal flesh; 372 Praise to the living God )

Session Six (July 9) – Hymns that use more than a Fifth and some that combine the March and the Waltz (ie: 625 Ye holy angels bright; 379 God is love; 711 – Seek ye first; 712 Dona Nobis; 302 Father, we thank thee; Sheet music Gloria – Somers)
